Sunway Education Group Sets Up Dedicated COVID-19 Student Support Fund

At Sunway Education Group (SEG), we understand and care for the safety and welfare of our students, especially those who are affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The newly launched Sunway Education Group COVID-19 Student Support Fund successfully raised RM33,600 recently, through the generous contribution from parents, alumni, staff, students, student leadership bodies, individuals and friends of the University and College.

The funds were used to support students away from home around Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya area, who require assistance and support due to movement restrictions. On a smaller scale, individual departments continued to provide real-time support solutions to emerging student needs.

A form is used to solicit student requests for assistance. The SEG COVID-19 Student Support Fund is open to students from all programmes under Sunway University and Sunway College. It serves as another avenue to access social support for students in addition to the departmental-level support by schools and various student support services. As of 9 June 2020, the Fund assisted 34 students in getting the food supplies. The parents of these students also experienced difficulties in transferring money amid the MCO, and with some of them losing their jobs or receiving no income.
Apart from financial issues, other challenges faced by students including the need for support in matters pertaining to their mental well-being; visa or passport issues; or being homesick. The team at SEG COVID-19 Student Support Fund operated as a conduit to refer these requests on a case-by-case basis to the relevant departments.
